Illan Meslier, the goalie for Leeds United, was rumored to be joining Marseille this summer, but it seems unlikely that he will be joining Roberto De Zerbi’s team as they are pursuing another ‘keeper.

The 49ers should try to limit the number of big-name players they sell this summer as Leeds wants to start the new campaign with enough continuity to outshine their opponents for promotion.

There have been some connections made despite the absence of regular starters, such as goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who had a mixed 2024 year.

Illan Meslier linked with Marseille transfer under Roberto De Zerbi

Reports from France earlier in the summer linked Meslier with an intriguing transfer to Ligue 1 giants Marseille.

The starting lineup for the French team, which is now being managed by Roberto De Zerbi, is changing, with Pau Lopez leaving the position of goalkeeper.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper was reportedly offered £20 million as well, although Graham Smyth of the YEP has subsequently cast doubt on Meslier’s plans to move to Marseille.

Do you think Red Bull’s investment in Leeds is a good one?

Marseille set their sights on different ‘keeper with deal nearing

Leeds won’t allow Meslier to travel to Marseille this summer, according to a Canarias7 story, since the French team has their sights set on someone else.

Since Las Palmas’ goalie Alvaro Valles is already in negotiations with Marseille about his contract, it appears that they are replacing Pau Lopez with another Spaniard.

The midfielder must now consent to a move from Las Palmas to De Zerbi’s team in order for the two clubs to execute the £8.4 million transaction that has been agreed upon.

Meslier should be considered to sell either way

Meslier’s worth won’t increase significantly from where it is now as he enters the final two years of his deal.

We appeared to have a legitimate chance to cash in on a player who needed development when it seemed like Marseille was interested.

That appears to be out of the question right now, though, and it’s unclear if Meslier will step down as our top pick or stay.

Whether Meslier steps in or someone else does, we need to make improvements to our goal.
